We live in confusing times, with all kinds of contradictory messages competing for our attention. Self-improvement advice is a good example. On the one hand, you’re told to believe that you’re unique and amazing and that there’s no reason why you can’t get what you want. On the other hand, we’re constantly warned about narcissism and entitlement. So where is the line?
The test below is meant to help you take a more realistic look at your expectations. Unrealistic expectations can set you up for frustration, anger, disappointment and sadness. Admitting that some of your expectations are unrealistic doesn’t mean giving up on happiness or success. Sometimes it simply means accepting that things won’t always go the way you expect.
1. I expect people to make special allowances for me when something is particularly important to me.
2. I become frustrated when things don’t go my way.
3. If I do something good for other people, I expect them to return the favor.
4. If I’ve done a lot for my partner, I expect them to give up things they want for me.
5. I expect a promotion at work simply because I do my job well or have been there for a long time.

6. I expect other people to rearrange their plans when I need their help.
7. I get annoyed when rules or restrictions apply to me if I think they shouldn’t.
